Private tour to the national park of Cabrera
The National park of Cabrera is constituted by the main island, 'Cabrera gran', the rabbit island, 'la isla dels Conills', more than fifteen smaller islands and the surrounding waters. In less than one hour of sailing from the port s'Estanyol, the Cabrera's archipelago is one of the best examples of the unaltered insular ecosystems of the Spanish Mediterranean.
From its constitution in 1991, the National park of Cabrera shelters all the natural resources of this group of limestone islands and islets that cover from: Important colonies of seabirds, endemic species and one of the best conserved seabeds of our coastline.
The archipelago is an important staging post in the migratory routes of more that 150 bird species, both in the spring and autum migration. Common residents of these islands are the Adouin seagul (Larus audouini), the Eleonora falcon (Falco eleonorae), as a few examples. The sea beds also represents a very important part of the park with more than 200 species of fishes and a great number of endemic invertebrates.
The island of Cabrera and the major islets have been visited by all the main mediterranean cultures such as Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Byzantine and Romans. Its name has its origin from the mountain goats that used to live in the island long time ago, now extinct.Over the centuries of XIII and XIV, The main island of Cabrera and its natural port were used among Berber pirates, as a base from where attak the Mallorca shore. For that reason, in the XIV century, at the harbour entrance a castle was built. This castle prevented the use of the port as a pirate base and allowed a much better surveillance of the offshore waters of Mallorca.
By its history, flora, fauna, beaches and its paradisiacal surroundings far from the bustle of its big sister Mallorca, the visit to Cabrera should be a must in the bucket list of any traveler.
